Louis P. Martini Remembered

Our good friend Louis P. Martini of Louis M. Martini Winery passed away on September 21, 1998, after a brief battle with cancer.

Louis was a true giant and pioneer of our great California wine industry. His contributions to the world of wine were numerous. He was a founder of the Wine Institute, California's wine trade association and was also a charter member of the American Society of Enology and Viticulture. Did you know that he was the first American vintner to use the varietal name "Merlot" on a wine label? Yes, Louis, you certainly started something! And no one anywhere made better Moscato Amabile (one of the Duke's favorite wines).

Louis was the first person to dub David "The Duke." He and his family worked closely with our store and created many special wines for us over the years. The most recent one, made by his son, Michael, is the outstanding 1994 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Duke's 30th Anniversary Cuvée.

We will never forget our friend Louis. His daughter, Carolyn, told us that he died with the same gentle grace with which he lived and told his family not to worry about him. We won't worry, Louis, but we will always remember you. Thanks for all you have given us.

Arns 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon
A New Rare California Gem

It's new...it's rare...it's a real gem! The Arns 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon is definitely one of the top wines released this year from the highly touted 1995 vintage.

This beauty exhibits powerful and luscious fruit with an outstanding tannin structure and a long, distinguished finish. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 19 months in 50% new French Oak.

Co-owners John Arns, a U.C.-Berkley and Davis graduate whose focus has always been grape growing and fine wine production, and Sandi Belcher, the winemaker at Long Vineyards for the past 20 years, established Arns winery in the heart of the Napa Valley just east of the city of St. Helena. It is situated on a 160-acre parcel 800 feet above the Valley floor and below the Howell Mountain appellation. This parcel has a history of grape growing going back into the 1800s, with fruit from some of the blocks being sold in the past to notables such as Dunn Vineyards.

John and Sandi have attempted to preserve an authenticity of style that reflects the vineyard location and their own personalities. Their wines have received rave reviews, consistently sold out quickly and become true trophy wines.

Don't miss your chance to get this gem. It's a must for your cellar! Try some now...lay some down for future rewards!

    Introducing JARVIS...

And Its Cave Fermented Cabernet Sauvignon

William Jarvis, left, and winemaker Dimitri Tchelistcheff
People who appreciate and enjoy really fine wines will welcome Jarvis to the ranks of Napa Valley's finest wineries. The 100% estate grown and produced Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay reflect the many years owner William Jarvis has dedicated to the study of fine wine, as well as the decade he has devoted to the development and production of his own wines of premier quality and consummate style. His goals have now been superbly attained by winemaker Dimitri Tchelistcheff.

Located in the eastern hills of the Napa Valley at 1,000' elevation, the 1,400-acre estate enjoys a climate cooler than Carneros and rests on hillside volcanic soil. Thirty-seven acres of vineyards are planted. The magnetic North-South orientation of the rows optimizes the morning sun relative to the afternoon sun.

As an additional focus on vineyard quality, vines are widely spaced, with only 560 vines per acre, versus as many as 2,400 per acre elsewhere. Clones and trellising were selected to produce small-size berries with intense flavor and varietal character. Hand picked into 35-pound lugs, grapes go directly from the estate vineyards to the winery cavern excavated into the steep, rock-layered hillside.

This is no ordinary cavern. With 45,000 square feet of floor space, the Jarvis cavern contains the entire winemaking process. Sheltered in the subdued lighting, wines never see the light of day until the day they're shipped.

The impressive underground structure provides more than the customary advantages of cave construction. Within its galleries, an underground stream and waterfall provide the ideal humidity for aging fine wines in oak and also create an awesome setting for enjoyment of its exceptional wines.

The Jarvis Winery can only be described as a technical marvel of modern engineering. A grand reception hall, the Crystal Chamber, matches some of the dimensions of the Versailles Hall of Mirrors. This singular geotechnic achievement is made possible by recent technology utilizing parabolic structures to support the spacious chambers.

This is no ordinary cavern. With 45,000
square feet of floor space, the Jarvis cav-
ern contains the entire winemaking process.
The initial large chamber, the fermentation gallery, reaches a height of 18' and has a width of 26'. The row of fermenters includes upright tanks as well as rotary fermenters. This is not typical equipment. The tanks are short and squat to improve the cap ratio for optimum color and flavor extraction from the skins. Wider in diameter than the upright tanks, the rotary fermenters, used exclusively for the Cabernet Sauvignon and other red wine grapes, have a nearly ideal cap ratio.

The main gallery is circular to simplify access between all areas of the winery. Consequently, it is no more than a few hundred feet from the winemaker's laboratory to his furthest barrel. This enables him to watch over his wines with ease. To further facilitate this attention, barrels rest in single tiers.

After fermentation, wines are moved into upright oak cuves to minimize contact with the stainless steel and to begin their oak regimen. Each vintage of Jarvis wine is aged in 100% new French oak barrels. The Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Franc are neither filtered nor fined; the Chardonnay receives only minimal filtration.

Within the unique winery facilities, Jarvis winemaker Dimitri Tchelistcheff creates limited quantities of wines of great distinction. Extending the grand winemaking traditions of his late father, André, Dimitri is well established as a world-class winemaker.

"Our mission at Jarvis is to make wine for the most discriminating wine drinker," states William Jarvis. "Our estate grapes are an essential element of these distinctive wines of great character and elegance. We invite you to visit our cavern and enjoy them yourself."

    Chardonnay:
Clean tropical wines, complex, white Burgundy-style nose with a hint of toasted hazel-nuts and good fruit and wood accents. Rich, deep, luxuriant flavors. Long, lingering finish.

    Cabernet Sauvignon:
Rich, deep, full-bodied intensity and color. Concentrated black cherry flavors and aromas enhanced by oak. Soft, velvety mouthfeel and long, rich finish, full of fruit and flavor. Very drinkable upon release, will continue to develop beautifully with up to 15 years of additional cellaring.

    Merlot:
Characterized by its incredible fruit concentration and intense velvet richness. Blended with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, this merlot is extremely flavor intense, with an appealing range of plum, black cherry and spice flavors rounded out by a fine oak finish which pleasantly lingers on the palate.
