he Duke of Bourbon is proud to be one of the flagship stores for the outstanding new release of Arns 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon. We had overwhelming response to the 1996 vintage and we expect the same fervor with the 1997!

Arns is located east of St. Helena, CA. The 160-acre parcel sits at an elevation of 800 feet above the valley floor and below the Howell Mountain appellation. The wine is a selection from nine different blocks with clones from Bordeaux and Napa Valley.

Owners John Arns and Sandi Belcher are not newcomers to the Napa Valley nor to premium wine production. John grew up in Berkeley, CA, graduating from UC Berkeley and UC Davis. His focus has always been grape growing and fine wine production. He has consulted and managed many well-known vineyards that have produced wine for high-end wineries for the past 25 years. Sandi grew up in Williamsburg, VA, graduating from the College of William & Mary and UC Davis. She has been the winemaker at Long Vineyards for the past 23 years.

The estate-grown Arns 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 19 months in up to 80% new French Oak. The grapes were picked and put into a small destemmer which separated the berries from the stems. It then saw extended maceration in stainless steel tanks, while the must was pressed with a 1.2 ton basket press made in Italy.

The finished wine is extremely fruity and earthy with scents of cherries, plums, black figs, vanilla and mocha. The mouth-coating flavors of oaked currants, plums, figs and cherries are backed by firmly structured tannins, supple texture and a sense of compressed power. This is a massively proportioned and beautifully crafted Cabernet destined to be both bold and refined.

 Only 800 cases were produced of this terrific Pinot Noir which
 is deep garnet in color, has intense aromas of spice, coffee,
 cocoa/chocolate, rich blackberry and black cherry fruit with slight
 earthy nuances. The palate is full and velvety in texture, bursting
 with blackberry/cherry fruit, anise, chocolate and coffee. The
 finish is long and focused with lingering bright fruit and great
 acidity.

 From the new winery started by Far Niente dedicated to producing
 single-vineyard wines. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is bold and
 impressive and resembles a hillside wine, although the vineyard is
 very flat. The color is a beautiful shade of garnet with aromas of
 cassis, tea and herbs. Currant, tobacco, dark chocolate and sweet
 toasty oak are uplifted by the fine yet rich tannins that are evident
 from front to finish. Wine Spectator scored it 91!

 This wine opens up to notes of plum, cherry, clove and white pepper
 and the texture is fat and unyielding. Spicy, sweet oak supports
 and expands the middle palate and the mature tannins give length

Tay 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon                  BOTTLE $50.00     $289.99
 A new wine produced by Bruce Scotland of Cornerstone, which is known
 for making superb Cabernet Sauvignons. This second release comes from
 a "meritage" of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and about equal parts Cabernet
 Franc and Malbec from the northern Yountville area. The wine is aged
 in barrel for two years. The style is sleek and Bordelaise with
 aromas that are complex but delicate, as are the palate flavors. With
 an extra year of bottle age, this wine is showy even now. We think it
 is a real winner!

Walter Hansel 1998 Chardonnay, "Cuvée Alyce" BOTTLE $28.00     $159.99
 The "Cuvée Alyce" is named after the matriarch of the Walter Hansel
 Family. This wine from the Russian River Valley is reminiscent of the
 great wines produced by Helen Turley. Its buttered citrus and smoky,
 roasted nut-scented nose is layered with rich fruit nicely balanced
 by zesty acidity and finished with a long, leesy hazelnut character.
 Absolutely luscious! Only 354 cases produced.

 rich, bold and delicious. This wine tastes as good or better than
 many of its much more expensive counterparts!

 When we taste wines, we look for lots of fruit and lots of flavor
 and for wines that are drinkable. This is one of the best-drinking
 Merlots we've tried in a while. It possesses loads of up-front fruit,
 a great mid-palate mouth-feel and a lovely silky finish. It will
 complement a variety of food, including grilled beef, lamb and
 seafood. We think this is quite a bargain in today's Merlot world.

Real Millennium Dinner

ow - a 10-course gourmet dinner prepared by the exceptionally talented executive chefs of several Four Seasons Hotels - extraordinary wines from large-format bottles paired with each course - presented on Saturday, November 18, 2000, at the elegant Four Seasons Biltmore Hotel in Santa Barbara, California!!!

This fantastic dinner was one of the live-auction lots offered at the recent KCBX Central Coast Wine Classic. Only forty seats were offered at $1,000 each, the proceeds going to KCBX Public Radio (so it is tax deductible). Precedence for this dinner was established last March at the hugely successful Millennium Dinner - a truly incredible evening of wine and food which sold for $2,000 per seat.

We learned that a few seats for the "Real Millennium Dinner" are still available and rooms have been blocked at the hotel at a special rate.
