Silverado Cellars Red Wine...
from Chateau Montelena!!!

Bottle $13.99 $79.99
any of you may not be aware of the fact that Silverado Cellars was the original name of the property which now houses Chateau Montelena.

Usually, Chateau Montelena sells their "extra juice" to other bottlers via the bulk market. However, so much of the 1997 vintage juice was so good that they kept it in barrels and just could not bring themselves to let it go! They made all of their production blends and still had a lot of extra Cabernet Sauvignon from their Estate vineyard and about an equal amount of leftover Cabernet Franc. They also had some Estate and Cuvée Merlot (about half as much as the Cabs) and a couple of barrels of Estate Sangiovese!

What they created was a typical Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, but they also added in the Sangiovese and came up with, as winemaker Bo Barrett characterized it, "your good old Bordeaux-blend, super-Tuscan fusion project... or else if you look at it another way it's every red we grow except the Zin!"

Silverado Cellars 1997 Red Table wine is big, rich, full and loaded with fruit and great character, typical of Chateau Montelena. This wine was only produced this vintage and we don't know when it will produced again. It is a wine you will definitely want to have for everyday drinking and we suggest you lay some down for a few years to see how it progresses!!!

New Releases and "Near Futures" Offering on Single-Vineyard Wines from Nickel & Nickel

Cabernet Sauvignon
"Near Futures" Program
September 2000 Release
50% Deposit Required
No Minimum • Limit 6 of each

Merlot & Zinfandel are currently available!
he partners of Far Niente, Gil Nickel, Dirk Hampson and Larry Maguire, are launching a new winery named Nickel & Nickel. The winery will be built on a 40-acre site across from Robert Mondavi Winery, just north of Opus One. It will specialize in only single-vineyard wines.

We are pleased and honored to be among the few select wine shops to offer the first Nickel & Nickel wines from the 1997 vintage. The Merlot and Zinfandel are currently available, while the Cabernet Sauvignons are available as "Near Futures."

The initial vineyards have been chosen from among Far Niente's own vineyards, as well as from independent growers. Dirk Hampson, Director of Winemaking, points out: "Each vineyard must have a distinctive character associated with its unique location in order to make it a candidate for Nickel & Nickel."

Far Niente Managing Director, Larry Maguire, summarized the reasons behind the new venture: "Beyond the charm and challenge, small lots will fill a growing desire by...select wine shops to discover new and exclusive products. Nickel & Nickel allows us to explore this exciting area without diluting our efforts at Far Niente, which has been so important to our success with its own distinctive 'house style.'"

The Cabernet Sauvignons will be released in September of 2000. We are collecting a 50% deposit on these wines, with the remainder and any applicable sales tax due when the wines arrive. The Zinfandel and Merlot are in the store now.

1997 Cabernet Sauvignon, John C. Sullenger Vineyard
Bottle $65.00
Six Pack $390.00
his vineyard is located just north of Opus One, and east of Robert Mondavi Winery and the famous To-Kalon vineyard in Oakville. This site will be the future home of the Nickel & Nickel winery.

Harmonious and plush, this wine is a beautiful expression of this vineyard, opening with delicately perfumed aromas and evolving into dusty, earth tones. The entry is very warm and smooth with forward fruit flavors of plum and cherry filling the palate. Layers of coffee and light herb intermixed with sweet, toasty oak add great breadth, while elegant tannins complete the package.

This historic vineyard is named after Napa Valley pioneer John Crawford Sullenger who, in 1865, purchased this property and adjoining parcels amounting to 150 acres of Oakville. He later sold a portion of his land to Inglenook proprietor Gustav Niebaum and Far Niente Winery architect John McIntyre. By 1895, he had planted a portion of his remaining property to 10 acres of Zinfandel. Today, the vineyard is planted to Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc.

1997 Cabernet Sauvignon, Stelling Vineyard
Bottle $95.00
Six Pack $570.00
his vineyard is located behind Far Niente at the base of the western hills in Oakville. It occupies 100 acres that were at the center of one of the most significant fine vineyard land holdings ever witnessed. Martin Stelling managed to assemble nearly 5000 acres that spanned from Highway 29 to the first ridge between Dwyer Road and Bella Oaks Lane. Many famous hillside and benchland vineyards have since been recognized within this former holding.

The soils are composed of deep volcanic loam with underlying clay and gravel. The vineyard is split between a valley floor section gently sloping away from the base of the western hills and a second area that snakes into Halter Valley, a small and charming valley that starts into the hill. These soils produce only moderate vigor in the vines and result in wines with noted structure as well as impressive layers of blackberry and cassis flavors. This region is among the most appreciated for the longevity of its wines.

The Stelling Cabernet is a classic study in elegance, structure and complexity. It consistently reflects the nature of this location with flavors of blackberry, cassis and a slight dusty note. The silky tannins marry with the cedar-like oak creating layers of interest that continue into a very long finish. The Far Niente wines have proven that such structure and balance promise a long, rewarding and graceful progression as the wine ages in the bottle.

1997 Merlot, Suscol Ranch • Currently Available
Bottle $65.00
uscol Ranch is located at the entrance to Jameson Canyon, south of the city of Napa. The vineyard was planted in 1991, and is one of the first Merlot plantings in this area. The quality of this wine, which was originally in an experimental Far Niente Merlot program, was so superior that it was one of the wines that inspired the partners to create Nickel & Nickel winery. They appreciated the distinctiveness of this vineyard and thought that it warranted its right to be bottled as a stand-alone wine.

Smooth and persistent, this 1997 Merlot offers flavors of dark plum, sage and light herb enhanced by a realm of vanilla and toasty oak. The unique character of this vineyard includes a suppleness on the palate that few Merlots can offer. Its distinctiveness lies in the lush, velvety tannins that expand upon the initial sip and develop with richness through the finish. This evolution allows one to enjoy the wine today, yet also rewards those who choose to lie it down in the cellar.

$410.00

1997 Cabernet Sauvignon, Carpenter Vineyard
Bottle $75.00
Six Pack $450.00
he Carpenter vineyard is located just east of the city of Napa at the base of the Vaca Mountain range in the Coombsville area. The soils are composed of deep volcanic, gravelly loam which drains well throughout the winter months. Cool growing conditions contribute heavily to the character of this wine. Fog hangs over the vineyard until mid morning and prevailing winds from the bay move through in the afternoon. The summer days rarely reach extreme temperatures, so the vines have nice temperate conditions. These cooler conditions allow for slow ripening and long `hang time,' which allows for long tannin maturity. This vineyard is one of the last to be harvested each year.

Bold and impressive, this 100% Cabernet strikingly resembles hillside fruit although the vineyard is fairly flat. The color is a beautiful shade of garnet with aromas of cassis, tea and herb. Currant, tobacco, and dark chocolate and sweet, toasty oak are uplifted by the firm yet rich tannins that are evident from front to finish. This tight core of fruit with fleshy tannins is the signature of this vineyard.

Bob and Carol Mae Sproul planted the 57-acre Carpenter Vineyard in 1982. The land was initially developed with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Today, 61% of the vines are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon.

1997 Cabernet Sauvignon, Rock Cairn Vineyard
Bottle $75.00
Six Pack $450.00
lanted in 1984, Rock Cairn lies at the western base of the Yountville hill in the Oakville Appellation. The vineyard is dry farmed with no type of irrigation, which results in very concentrated fruit late in the season. The vines have a lovely display of growth with a curtain of shoots falling toward the ground. Leaves are pulled by hand to give the desired filtered light on the berries without causing any chance of sunburn from the occasional hot summer sun. Although the clusters are not particularly small, the fruit matures to a wonderful explosion of ripe flavors.

Exhibiting many of the characteristics of Oakville, this 1997 Rock Cairn Cabernet Sauvignon is richly structured and powerful. It has aromas of cherry, anise and herb with an underlying dusty earthiness of this area. The wine opens up to notes of plum, cherry, clove and white pepper and the texture is fat and unyielding. Spicy, sweet oak supports and expands the middle palate and the mature tannins give length to the finish of this age-worthy wine.

Originally part of the Rancho Caymus land grant to George C. Yount, this vineyard was named after the cairns or `pile of rocks' that were formed at the various locations throughout the property. Long ago the land was traveled by the Indians who, as they passed over the hill, would say a prayer and place a rock on the cairn. Today, the Pelissa family owns this land. They purchased the land in the early 1950s and began to redevelop the existing vineyards into what they are today.

1997 Zinfandel, Ponzo Vineyard • Currently Available
Bottle $35.00
ocated in the town of Healdsburg, the Ponzo vineyard nearly lines the border between Dry Creek Valley and Russian River Valley. The climate is fairly cool and mild due to the coastal influences and the vineyard often sits under the morning fog in the early summer. The coastal breezes tend to keep temperatures under control in the late summer and offer good conditions for fruit ripening. The vineyard is on flat, sandy loam soil and is dry-farmed, resulting in deeply concentrated fruit from old vines.

Ripe and fruity, this 1997 Zinfandel is lively on the palate with flavors of raspberry, black cherry and black pepper mingled with layers of spice and toasty, smoky oak. The texture is rich but not weighty, balancing ripe fruit with a subtle, crisp acidity. These old vines produce deeply concentrated fruit, which creates a very showy wine.

Private Cellars, Unburied Treasures, Rare Treats & Special Vertical!

e are delighted to continue to offer special new private cellars, more unburied treasures and a very rare vertical collection. We still have some of the older wines in the private cellar available at very special prices. Many of the older whites and Pinot Noirs may or may not be great (but, reports have been mostly positive from previous purchasers!). Take your chances and you may get a good deal on an amazing wine. All sales on those wines are final. As always, the wines have been stored in a temperature-controlled environment. Scores in parentheses signify: WS=Wine Spectator, RP=Robert Parker, Jr.
