The Duke of Bourbon is a family-run retail wine and spirits enterprise established in 1967 in the West San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, California. Specializing in personalized service, it offers a hand-picked selection of unique and rare California wines as well as a fine selection of French, Italian and other world-class wines. In 1990, the Duke of Bourbon was chosen as one of the top twelve wine shops in America by Wine Spectator's Market Watch Magazine. In addition, excellent articles were published in Market Watch, June 1997, Beverage Retailer, May/June 1998 and Los Angeles Daily News, December 25 1998.
Table of Contents
Excitement abounds as we approach our 30th Anniversary Celebration on May 1. As we look back over the past 30 years, we realize how much has changed in our world of wines; yet, we have attempted to maintain continuity through our Vine-Line.
As you will notice, this issue is Volume XXVII, Number 1. Yes, the first edition of our friendly little newsletter was published on February 1, 1971! We were so proud of that issue featuring the wines of Schramsberg, Chappellet, Freemark Abbey, Mayacamas, Louis Martini, Robert Mondavi and Hanzell. The second issue in May introduced the wines of Heitz Cellars and Ridge Vineyards.
Those were the days when we could be "true wine merchants"...tasting and writing about our rare finds and sharing the information with our customers. We were one of the few links between producers and consumers and it was quite rewarding.
Although we were lucky to continue to feature most of those same early wineries, the world certainly has changed since that time. Today, there are so many outstanding new wineries and wines that it is difficult for us to feature all of them and for consumers to keep up with on their own. Wine Spectator and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate as well as numerous other fine wine magazines and newsletters offer their opinions to the consumer. Yet, we at the DUKE still continue to work hard to discover and taste as many fine wines as we can and share our view on them with you via our Vine-Line. And, as always, we hold to our creed: "If we can't write something nice about a wine, we don't bother to write about it!"
With a look toward an exciting future, we thank all of you for all the years of supporting the DUKE OF BOURBON and the wonderful wines we offer to you, our very special clientele!
We are delighted to repeat our highly successful futures program with wines from Au Bon Climat Winery in Santa Maria, CA. The following wines are from the 1995 vintage and will be delivered in April, 1997, except for the "Isabelle," which will be released in August, 1997.
- Au Bon Climat 1995 Pinot Noir, "Isabelle" (Scheduled for release in August, 1997.) - Produced in honor of Jim Clendenen's daughter, Isabelle, the 1994 vintage was one of the most sought-after wines last year...and with good reason. It may have been the best domestic Pinot Noir ever released. The 1995 vintage promises to be just as exciting. It was blended from Jim's five best barrels of Pinot Noir from his most special vineyard sources, including Sanford & Benedict, Ici/La-Bas and Bien Nacido. The flavors are so rich and so full and so multi-dimensional that this super star of California Pinot Noirs shines as one of the all-time best!
- Au Bon Climat 1995 Chardonnay, Reserve "Le Bouge" - A spectacular Chardonnay with beautiful fruit aromas hinting of citrus, pineapple, oak and vanilla. The rich, full mouth bursts with varietal fruit and toasty oak, lingering in a very full finish.
- Au Bon Climat 1995 Chardonnay, Reserve "Talley" - Owner/Winemaker Jim Clendenen says, "this may be the best white wine I have ever made." This dynamic Chardonnay exhibits an intense fruit/oak aroma with powerful and luscious flavors of perfectly balanced fruit, oak and acid. The long, full finish leaves you wanting more. A superb wine!
- Au Bon Climat 1995 Pinot Noir, "Mistral" - This one-time release from the Pico Vineyard in Santa Maria has a delightful Pinot Noir nose with great fruit/berry/jammy character and a hint of earth. It has a light mouth-feel and a terrific finish.
- Au Bon Climat 1995 Pinot Noir, "La Bauge" - Truly a superior wine from the famed Bien Nacido Vineyard, with 1/3 of the fruit from the "Q" Block and 2/3 from the "G" Block. This block-buster has a complex nose - big, bold and beautiful - fruity, spicy and earthy. The luscious berry flavor is rich, intense and earthy with an awesome killer finish!
NOTE: We will be offering "Futures" on the remaining wines of Au Bon Climat along with the wines of Qupe in our next issue of Vine-Line.

***Duke's Dozen - One of Each Only $117.50***
The Staglin Family Vineyard is a family-owned Napa Valley winery devoted to producing limited quantities of the highest quality wine from their own vineyard, which has been deemed one of the top five vineyards in California.
Their 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely outstanding. The tasting notes from the winery describe it beautifully: "The 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon grapes come from a special place in Rutherford. These grapes were once the primary component of the Beaulieu Vineyards' Georges de Latour Private Reserve wines. Our 1994 Cabernet was aged in French oak for 24 months with half the barrels new this year. Blended with 4% Cabernet Franc to add richness and depth, the 1994 Cabernet shows classic Rutherford qualities of cassis and blackberry, with toasty oak and vanilla tones adding complexity. This wine has power and layers of flavors, with chocolate and cedar character emerging in the glass. Over time, this wine will be remembered as one of our best."
The wine is ideal for long-term aging and will be drinking very well in the next year or two. Do yourself a favor and put away 6 or 12 bottles.
This is an impressive full red wine with deep purple color and incredibly rich flavor. The ample tannins are beautifully balanced by inviting aromas and full-bodied tastes of black cherry, cassis and currant fruit with sweetness from French oak barrels. Although it is quite powerful and promises ten or more years of aging potential, it is amazingly drinkable right now! Scored 90+ by Robert Parker in the Wine Advocate. - $24.00; 6 or more $22.50.
1995 Sangiovese - $20.00 - Bob Long, Zelma Long and Sandi Belcher have created a powerful and exciting Sangiovese in the true Italian style. It was produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown on the Seghesio Family's Geyserville Vineyard. To highlight the pure varietal character and richness of the fruit, no new oak was used for aging. The result is a big, delicious wine with deep color and great complexity. Limited production of only 200 cases.
1995 Chardonnay List $32.00; Duke's Price $27.50 - Once again, Long Vineyards offers us a classic Burgundian-style Chardonnay. Rich, forward fruit balanced by toasty French oak provide a full, round mouth-feel and a long, inviting after-taste.

We're particularly excited by the new Chef's Tasting Menu, which features a six-course meal designed to be shared by parties of four or more. The menu is offered with selected wines to accompany each course at the reasonable price of $39.00 per person; or without wine at $24.00 per person. Call the charming co-owner Yvonne Kang, or the affable manager, Lawrence Chyall, for more detailed information and reservations. Yujean Kang's, 8826 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood, CA 90069 (310) 288-0806.
- You can still pick up a copy of the delightful new book Wine & Dine, California Fine Wines Matched with Gourmet Recipes by our own Ron Breitstein along with his partner Hendrik Van Leuven. Wine & Dine is only $15.95. For more details please call us at (818) 341-1234.
Congratulations to Andrew and Kristy Murray for having their outstanding 1994 Syrah selected as the Los Angeles Times Wine of the Week (January 16, 1997)! S. Irene Virbila, the Times' restaurant reviewer and wine-of-the-week editor, describes it as follows:
"From a small Los Olivos winery dedicated entirely to Rhone varietals comes this sterling handcrafted Syrah. A concentrated, lush wine the color of black cherry juice, it has an intense perfume of ripe red berries, vanilla and dried herbs. This is a Syrah meant for the table: to accompany grilled chops, wild birds and robust stews. Just the wine for the season."
We are pleased to have the Andrew Murray Syrah in
stock for only $25.00 per bottle. It is definitely worth a try!
