Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon

It occurs to us that those of you who don't visit the store are not familiar with the concept of the Duke's Dozen. Well, the concept is simple - 12 wines under $12.00. Wines carefully chosen to have an excellent quality-to-price ratio. As most of you know, there is a lot of wine available for less than $12.00 per bottle. Unfortunately for the consumer, a substantial percentage of such wine is borderline undrinkable. Enter the Duke! We put our palates on the firing line to pick out the wheat from the chaff that some stores are willing to offer the unwary consumer. Here is a sampling of our value-priced wines - all under $12.00 per bottle and all tasty!

Stone House 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon - List price - $16.00 Duke's price - $11.99 each
The 2004 Stone House was a huge success and thankfully the new vintage is tasting just as well. Stone House, produced in Healdsburg, is medium-bodied and full of great flavor. Taste this one blind and you would never put it in this price range. This is one of the hottest items we have found in a couple of years. A staff favorite for everyday drinking and dining pleasure.

Stone House 2006 Zinfandel - List price - $16.00 Duke's price - $11.99 each
Another high-quality, low-price offering from Stone House. Full of raspberry and spice aromas and flavors. Great Zin at zin-fully low cost.

Garnacha de Fuego - List price - $12.00 Duke's price - $7.99 each
A sensational Spanish selection from Jorge Ordonez. Full-bodied Garnacha (Grenache to the rest of us) from old vines. Robert Parker named the previous vintage as a "Wine of the Week" and this vintage follows closely in those footsteps.

El Portillo 2008 Sauvignon Blanc - List price - $10.00 Duke's price - $7.99 each
Argentina is beginning to emerge as a top-flight wine-producing region. El Portillo is fresh and delicious with vibrant citrus notes. Try this one - you won't be disappointed.

Bricco Buon Natale 2005 Barbera - List price - $15.00 Duke's price - $10.99 each
Winemaker Jim Clendenen's brilliant effort at producing an Italian varietal from the Central Coast. This wine has been featured in the wine sections of both the New York Times and Los Angeles Times. Those of you who attended the Duke's Super Seminar XXXVI had a little taste of Jim's touch with Italian wines when we sampled his Sangiovese and Nebbiolo to great acclaim.

Queen of Hearts 2007 Pinot Noir - List price - $17.00 Duke's price - $11.99 each
Grown in the Lucas-Lewellen vineyards on the Central Coast and vinified under the careful eye of Megan McGrath, former winemaker at Flowers Vineyards. Parlay meticulous farming, a winemaker's passion and an eye to value and VIOLA!! Incredible value for your table.

Hawk Crest 2007 Chardonnay - List price - $13.00 Duke's price - $8.99 each
Hawk Crest may be the second label of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, but that does not mean a second-class wine. This is a crisp, clean Chardonnay from Monterey County fruit that fills the mouth with fresh fruit flavors. Tired of wood on your white wine? This one will answer that question.

Hawk Crest 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon - List price - $14.00 Duke's price - $9.99 each
Delicious flavors with approachable tannic structure and red cherry, currants and smoky blackberry notes on the palate. This is a "house wine" and then some.

Villa Sande Prosecco, Il Fresco (NV) - List price - $17.00 Duke's price - $11.99 each
We tasted this at a recent Italian wine dinner with the Duke's Wine Association and were wowed, if that is a word. If it isn't, it sure decribes how we felt. Crisp and lean with lemon notes on the palate, this is a fine match with light dishes and also with just conversation. Festive and inexpensive!

2006 Paso A Paso - List price - $16.00 Duke's price - $11.99 each
This delicious deep ruby red wine from La Mancha is made from 100% Tempranillo grapes. It has aromas of coffee, chocolate and ripe red fruits with cinnamon and cherry flavors on the palate. Mild tannins, good balance and medium body round out this beautiful wine at an amazing price.

Maddelena 2007 Riesling - List price - $13.00 Duke's price - $9.99 each
Looking for a wine with a touch of sweetness to pair with some spicy Asian fare? Look no farther! The backbone of juicy acidity from Monterey fruit makes this wine up to the task. Try it with a bit of steam from the hot tub!

Bodegas Septima 2006 Malbec
- List price - $13.50 Duke's price - $10.99 each
The Mendoza area of Argentina, in the foothills of the Andes, has become the premier place on the planet to plant Malbec. Somehow, here, Malbec, which can be a bit stiff and unwieldly, becomes succulent and rich. Perfect accompaniment for steak and roast meats.

Chaparral Chardonnay - List price - $18.00 Duke's price - $11.99 each
This teriffic Chardonnay is produced and bottled especially for The Duke by Au Bon Climat's colorful proprietor Jim Clendenen, whose acclaimed ABC Chardonnays sell for two to three times as much. The 2007 is a gem and a great bargain. Try it, you'll love it.

Chateau De Campuget - List price $13.50 Duke's price - $10.99 each
Costieres de Nimes, Rhone, France, the 2005 Chateau de Campuget is a garnet-red colored wine with a blue hue. Scents of ripe fruit is dominated by blackcurrants underlined with hints of spices and pepper. This blended Rhone is 65% Syrah, 30% Grenache Noir, 5% Mourvedre and pairs with Leg of Lamb, and grilled or roasted meats.
Bon Apetite!
