(Robert's younger son) stopped by the store last week to show us the second vintage of
, the result of a partnership between Tim, his sister Marcia and Margrit Mondavi (Robert's widow). Before we tell you how simply fabulous the wine is, let us give a brief story of Continuum. The label art (to the right) is an abstract of a grape vine in silhouette to a setting sun. After the sale of Robert Mondavi Winery a few years ago, Tim and Marcia, along with Robert, regrouped and formed their own company, which goes by the name Continuum to reflect their family's ties to wine and their ongoing passion for it. The way Tim sees it, he's merely starting over, just like his father did when he launched Robert Mondavi Winery in 1966 after being ousted from Charles Krug winery (which his family owned). The vision for Continuum is to be a single red wine estate to stand in the company of the great wine estates of the world, i.e. be identified as a first-growth California estate.
The Continuum grapes are sourced from from two vineyards in Oakville, Marjorie's Vineyard (named after Tim's mother) and To-Kalon Vineyard, both long mainstays of Robert Mondavi Winery's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignons, one of Napa Valley's most respected and renowned wines. The base wine is Cabernet Sauvignon (59%). Cabernet Franc (25%) from old vines contributes fragrance, sweetness in the mouth and length. Petit Verdot (16%) brings richness, muscularity and density to the wine. The Petit Verdot helps age the wine in a fleshy, wonderful way.
Continuum 2006 is very similar to the 2005 vintage, which achieved a 95+ rating from Robert Parker. We tasted a luscious fruit-filled mouthful of a wine that is exceptionally well-balanced. The tannins are present but they are smooth and silky to allow us hedonists to enjoy the wine in the near-term and solid enough to age gracefully for two decades or more. This is a wine in the same tier as the "cult" wines from Napa Valley. We have a limited allocation of this classic beauty that we are able to offer you on a pre-arrival sale. The suggested retail price is $142.00 each. The Duke's special pre-arrival price is $129.99 per bottle. Buy a 6-pack for $750. 00 and receive an additional discount ($125.00 per bottle). We expect the wine to be here by March 10. This wine is certain to become one of the top wines in California in the next few years. Add it to your collection now!
