With a great deal of sadness, all of us at the Duke of Bourbon note the passing on May 16 of a legend of the California wine industry, Robert Mondavi, at the age of 94. Mondavi's influence on wine and the wine business spanned the globe. Both a pioneer and a driving force in Napa Valley, he opened the world's eyes to the unlimited potential of California wines.

Robert founded the Robert Mondavi Winery in 1966, just one year before the Duke of Bourbon was established. His winery offered many facets of wine education to merchants as well as consumers. His generosity in aiding new winemakers develop their skills and new wineries get started is well-known. He also established and donated to a multitude of charitable organizations. He lived life to the fullest and, even after two knee-replacement surgeries, he could be found on the dance floor with his loving wife, Margrit.


The Duke had many special wine experiences with Robert over these last 41 years. One of the most memorable occasions was at the 10th Napa Valley Wine Auction when Robert auctioned off the hat he was wearing to help put the earnings over the top . . . David (The Duke) bought that Panama hat and it is still on display in our Wine Vault!

Robert imparted his enthusiasm for and knowledge of the wine world to his children -- Michael, Tim and Marcia -- and they have continued his legacy, even after the Robert Mondavi Winery was sold.

Yes, Robert Mondavi was a vital force in the world of wine and we will miss him greatly. We are thankful to have known him. Let's all raise a glass of wine in his memory this week.
