Bodegas Luzon 2005 Altos de Luzon - Jumilla
Altos de Luzon is a blend of 50% old vine Mourvedre and equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo that is aged 12 months in a combination of French and American oak. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by beautiful aromas of smoky licorice, black currants, cherries, and earth. The wine has wonderful ripeness, an alluring texture, sweet tannin, and adequate acidity. It certainly over-delivers for its price! The previous vintage was rated RP 90, well earned and richly deserved! The Duke's staff loved that vintage and think that the newly released 2005 will be rated even more highly. This wine is sensational in taste and value!

Atteca 2006 Garnacha - Calatayud
Garnacha is king in Calatayud, their roots reaching deep into the gravelly slate soil. The combination of the soil, high altitudes and aridity are the holy trinity of quality Granacha. Atteca reflects the best of all three. This was a powerful wine, loaded with character. It is crystal black ruby with a magenta edge. The focused, intense nose of spicy, ripe raspberries and hot stones leads to a tightly packed and massive wine in the mouth, with dense black raspberry fruit and the barest hint of chalky earth. Intense!

Vinas del Cenit 2003 Cenit - Zamora
This is a modern style of Tempranillo made with very old vines from Zamora (in central Spain, near Madrid). It shows a deep and intense purple color. The nose displays great complexity and intensity with aromas of ripe fruit mixed with toasted and chocolate notes. On the palate, it has a terrific concentration, ripe flavors, well-integrated tannins and firm, crisp acidity. This wine is an ideal match for meat and game dishes. RP 90!! His quote: "Made from 60- to 100-year-old ungrafted Tinta de Toro vines, the 2003 Cenit boasts outstanding concentration as well as beautiful intensity, purity, and texture. This opaque purple-tinged effort reveals notes of graphite, kirsch liqueur, blackberries, and smoky oak. Rich, full-bodied, and impressive, it can be drunk now or cellared for 10-12 years."
Regular retail price - $50.00 The Duke's Super-Special price - $25.00 each.

Bodegas Juan Gil 2005 Juan Gil Monastrell - Jumilla
The Monastrell grapes selected for this wine come from 40-year-old parcels in estate vineyards. Here shallow, chalky soils on a bed of limestone and rock, combined with an arid climate, produce the low yields (1.8 tons per acre) required for wine of this complexity. After harvesting, the deep purple grapes are whole-cluster macerated sur lie for 25 days and then pressed and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. The sum of the climate, soil, and vinification is a wine with rich color, abundant ripe fruit aromas, and a long, spicy, well-balanced finish. Not yet rated by Parker, the three previous vintages received 90, 91 and 91 points.
Regular retail price - $18.00 - Duke's price - $15.99 each.

Campos Reales 2005 Tempranillo - La Mancha
Robert Parker reviewed this one and opined, "The 2005 Campos Reales is an unoaked cuvee of 100% Tempranillo from yields of 2 tons of fruit per acre, remarkably low for a wine at this humble price point. Dark ruby-colored with a fruity nose of crushed violets and blackberry, this medium-bodied wine has gobs of juicy, crunchy fruit. It is nicely balanced and has a lengthy finish." RP 87
Regular retail price - $10.49 - Duke's price - $6.99 each.

Bodegas Luzon 2006 Luzon - Jumilla
Jumilla has become the revelation among Spanish winemaking regions, emerging as a leading force in the national and international scene. Bodegas Luzon is among the leading producers in that area. This is a very young wine, potent, full of character and meaty. Luzon reflects the genuine character of the Monastrell grape, with an intense cherry red color and aromas in which the wood is perfectly integrated with the fruit. On the palate, it is rounded, expressive and potent without ever being aggressive. It has a long and persistent finish.
