"LIFE IS A CABERNET!" 40th Anniversary Celebration - Part 1Featuring CHAPPELLET DIAMOND CREEK MARTINI SILVER OAKThis is the start of something big - the first of many seminars celebrating the
40th ANNIVERSARY of the DUKE OF BOURBON!!! You may already know that May 1, 1967, was the DUKE's first day of business at the corner of Roscoe and De Soto in Canoga Park, California. Wow, time certainly has gone by quickly! Rather than have one big celebration as we did for past significant anniversaries (20th, 25th, 30th and 35th), we thought it would be meaningful to have a succession of special wine seminars featuring many of the wineries and wine friends who have helped make our 40 years so exciting and rewarding. We most cordially invite you to join us for our first 40th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, July 19, 2007. We have titled this event "LIFE IS A CABERNET!" for two reasons: this is the motto we have been using to close our newsletters and e-mails since 1971; all of our winery guests agree with us, as they have been producing significant Cabernet Sauvignons for almost as long or longer than we have been telling you about them. Sharing their wines and histories with us will be our long-time friends CARISSA CHAPPELLET and ALEXA CHAPPELLET of Chappellet Winery, BOOTS BROUNSTEIN
and PHIL ROSS of Diamond Creek Vineyards, MIKE MARTINI of Louis M. Martini Winery, and SUSAN CANNON of Silver Oak Cellars!
Chappellet Winery - One of the first ultra-premium wineries the DUKE discovered was Chappellet, founded in 1967 by Donn & Molly Chappellet. As you can see, the Chappellets are also celebrating 40 years in business this year and the DUKE is proud to have been among their first customers. In fact, when David & Judy visited Napa Valley together for the first time, their first appointment was at the Chappellets' home and winery. What a significant day that was 36 years ago. The Chappellet children are now running the winery beautifully and their wines are among Napa Valley's finest. We are delighted to welcome two of Donn's and Molly's daughters, Carissa and Alexa, to show not only their excellent current releases, but a special 30-year old treat from their library. What a great way to celebrate our mutual anniversaries!
Diamond Creek Vineyards - We began our relationship with founders Al & Boots Brounstein in the early 1970s and purchased their very first release (1972) of dynamic Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignons. Throughout the years, we have remained close with them and their family and they have been frequent guests at The Wine Association seminars. Sadly, Al passed away last year, but Boots and her son Phil Ross will join us at this event to continue the long tradition of offering their upcoming releases on future. We are thrilled to be able to showcase their greatly anticipated 2005 Cabernet Sauvignons in the form of barrel samples this evening. Wines purchased on future at this event will be delivered in October of 2007.
Louis M. Martini Winery - The DUKE has been offering the Martini wines since we opened our doors on May 1, 1967! We became close friends with Louis P. Martini and his wife Elizabeth, who were guests at many of our seminars. Unfortunately, Louis passed away in 1998. Their son Michael (grandson of winery founder Louis M. Martini), who has been the Martini Winemaker since 1978, has been a close friend of the DUKE's, too. In fact, it was Mike's idea to create special wines for significant DUKE anniversaries. The DUKE's 20th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon that Mike produced was a big hit and encouraged the many anniversary cuvées produced for us by Mike and other winemakers in the future. As Mike joins us for this 40th celebration, he is bringing us an extra-special treat - the 40-year-old Louis M. Martini 1967 Cabernet Sauvignon, Private Reserve!
Silver Oak Cellars - What a wonderful history we have with this winery! The DUKE has offered every vintage of Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon since their very first 1972 vintage. That covers 31 years, with #32 debuting at this event. Founded by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan, this winery has been dubbed "America's Winery" by all of its fans. Our friend Justin passed away several years ago, but Silver Oak's tradition of excellence hasn't missed a beat. Representing Silver Oak this evening, as she has so many times in past years, is our good friend Susan Cannon, their Southern California Sales Manager. She has done an amazing job of continuing the relationship between the winery and the DUKE and is like a member of the family to us. Tonight we'll get to preview their 2003 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon!
