Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon

It sometimes seems that we offer so many wines at the higher end of the price spectrum that we forget that people need something "to drink on Wednesday night." So, we have decided to remind you that we have many attractively priced wines that we think you might enjoy. If the descriptions are not adequate, dial the phone! We will be happy to describe each one to the extent of our limited vocabularies.

Joseph Phelps Vineyards 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Innisfree - Last Call!!
This special cuvee is produced in limited quantities and is intended as an everyday drinking wine in the Phelps spectrum of Cabernet Sauvignon. This vintage certainly has lots of fruit and substance! The color is deep ruby with aromas of cherries, spicy oak and some citrus. Good acidity and nice tannins support the delicious cherry and cocoa/mocha notes on the palate. Normally retailing for $25.00, the Duke's price - $19.99 per bottle. Buy it by the 6-pack for $102.00 and save - $17.00 per bottle! Note: The 2004 vintage is on the verge of being sold out! This is pretty much last call for this particular wine.

Louis Martini 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Duke's 35th Anniversary Cuvee
Looking for something with lots of richness? This is the one for you! Made especially for the Duke's 35th anniversary, here is a full-bodied Napa Valley wine priced right! The grapes for this wine were grown on the historic Ghost Pines Vineyard in Chiles Valley, a small appellation within the Napa Valley. For aromatics and structural depth, small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot were added to the Cabernet Sauvignon. A slightly spicy character was achieved by aging the blend in a mixture of French and American oak. It is deliciously drinkable now and will continue to age gracefully for many years! Normally retailing for $25.00, the Duke's price - $19.99 per bottle. Buy it by the 6-pack for $102.00 and save - $17.00 per bottle!

Chaparral 2005 Chardonnay
One of the things we love here at the Duke is a high-quality wine that is easily affordable. Working with Jim Clendenen (of Au Bon Climat fame), we have developed a sensational wine at a price that makes it ideal for parties and receptions. Sorry, we can't offer effusive quotes from Parker or the Wine Spectator. It is barrel-fermented and goes through malolactic fermentation. This is a rich, fruity wine that is simply delicious and will go well with a wide variety of foods and situations. Jim makes a similar Chardonnay that we have seen on a local restaurant's wine list for $40.00. We think our Chaparral is a good value at the estimated retail price of $18.00. It is available here at the Duke (we've owned the Chaparral label since 1977) at just $11.99 per bottle ($71.94 per 6-pack). Hint: Turn that 6-pack purchase into a full case to make the cost of shipping more effective.

Hawk Crest Wines
Known for fine quality and exceptional value, Hawk Crest wines have been handcrafted in the Napa Valley by Stag's Leap Wine Cellars since 1974. Hawk Crest consistently delivers distinctive, balanced and approachable wines that are ready to enjoy upon release and will continue to improve with age. Hawk Crest is the companion brand or "house wine" of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.

Hawk Crest 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon
Although the AVA is California, this delicious and exceptionally affordable wine has roots in California's Central Coast. The fruit from Paso Robles provides luscious red berry character, while the high altitude and volcanic soils of the Red Hills district of Lake County give the wine structure and depth. Intense and rich, this wine announces its arrival with a perfume of summer berries and black licorice and continues with a palate that is full and lushly fruited with red cherries and blackberries. This Cabernet Sauvignon will pair beautifully with a rich beef and barley stew, or grilled marinated skirt steak with Portobello mushrooms. Affordable may qualify as an understatement with this fine wine - priced elsewhere as high as $14.00 - available here at the Duke for $9.99 per bottle.

Hawk Crest 2005 Chardonnay
Vineyards in the cool Santa Lucia Highlands on the Monterey coast provide the core of Hawk Crest Chardonnay. The wine delivers bright acidity, minerality, and ripe fruit flavors that one would expect from a Macon Villages Chardonnay. Open a bottle with a lightly dressed Shrimp Louie and a chunk of sourdough bread for an incredible brunch. Normally retailing at $11.00, you can get that bottle at the Duke for just $7.99.
