We've told you the story of Leslie Rudd's entry on the Napa Valley wine scene in previous emails. He purchased an already beautiful property and has improved it beyond compare. The Rudd winemaking team is producing wines whose quality bears out the owner's commitment to making the very best wines possible. It goes without saying that winemaker Charles Thomas is doing a fabulous job=2E

Rudd 2003 Oakville Estate Proprietary Red is their current release - just now becoming available at the Duke. Thomas, deftly handling a tricky harvest, has crafted a wine that has a very deep lush color, concentrated black fruit flavors and earthy mineral aromas and that displays a rich mid-palate and a long, well-integrated finish.

Robert Parker seems to agree with that assessment and has awarded it 93 points on his 100-point scale. His comments included, "The 2003 Oakville Estate Proprietary Red is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, and equal parts Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec. This opaque purple-colored 2003 offers sweet aromas of scorched earth, tobacco leaf, blackberries, and currants. Layered, beautifully-textured, broad, elegant, and refreshing, this well-structured, superb effort should be consumed between 2008-2020."
