Most of you know that the Duke has been selling premium wine for nearly 40 years. Many of the winemakers whose wines graced our shelves "back in the day" now have their next generation carrying on the traditions. The Duke first sold Bob and Susan Pecota's wines from Robert Pecota Winery in 1980 and now finds that their daughter Kara is following in her famous parents' footsteps. Ditto for Mike Dunn. Son of Randy and Lori, Mike is carrying on the creative traditions of Dunn Vineyards, where he is cellarmaster, to his Retro project. Mike and Kara have been married for a number of years and, together, are making incredible Petite Sirah called Retro from the historic Park Muscatine vineyard on Howell Mountain. They chose the name Retro to pay hommage to the generational groundwork that's been laid for their endeavor. Mike recalls tending this vineyard and harvesting its fruit while helping his dad as a child. With yields of less than a ton per acre, this vineyard produces intense, highly-concentrated wines. Retro 2003 Petite Sirah is definitely a throwback to the days before "drinkable on release" became a byword to Napa Valley vintners. This is truly a "big mountain red" for which Howell Mountain is famous. We old-timers remember Park Muscatine from the seventies when the grapes were the foundation of many of Ridge's hallowed vintages. Mike and Kara have produced less than 200 cases of this massive wine. The aromas and flavors are of black fruit, the tannins intense and the acidity lively and crisp. If you can keep your hands off it, there are at least 20 years of life in the bottle. Mike and Kara, with another nod to tradition, have granted the Duke the status of exclusive Los Angeles retailer of this memorable wine. The Duke has this "big" gem available at $39.99 per bottle.
