Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon
Long-time friend-of-the-Duke Doug Margerum, owner of the Wine Cask restaurants in Santa Barbara and Los Olivos and the Wine Cask wine shop, is a terrific winemaker as well. Even casual readers of our emails know of our love of Doug's wines, especially his reds. We have offered them on futures before, but read on for a special treat as we approach the last call on "futures" on the wines featured below.Margerum 2005 M5 Doug's mission statement: M5 is a wine that is from a thought. It is a wine that is an amalgamation of memories, both distant and recent, of wines he's tasted and loved the past thirty-two years. M5 is a blend of the five principle Rhône varietals - Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Counoise. He co-ferments a tiny bit of Viognier in one of the lots, but refuses to call the wine M6. He uses a cadre of top-notch vineyards to make the blend: Syrah from Colson Canyon, Black Oak, Alondra de los Prados, Alisos, Vogelzang, and Great Oaks Ranch; Grenache from Purisima Mountain, Crossroads, Vogelzang and Thompson; and Mourvèdre from Vogelzang, Zaca Mesa and Terra Alta. The Counoise and Cinsault come from Stolpman. Doug says, "Yes, we are having fun. It will be the earliest-drinking M5, as the wines already have their secondary flavors due to early MLs, more co-fermentation in the blend, and very flavorful grapes at harvest ."M5 will retail for $25.00 after the October, 2006, release date. You can secure a passport to hedonism at just $19.99 per bottle by purchasing on "future." And now for the special treat: Magnums are available at a very modest upcharge - $42.00 each! <
b>Margerum 2005 Syrah, Great Oaks Ranch Doug thought that 2003 was the last vintage of the wonderful Syrah that he was making from the luscious fruit obtained from Great Oaks Ranch. However, he has succeeded in obtaining the fruit once more. The grapes from the part of the vineyard with the limestone outcroppings are small and intense, and the resulting wine is dark and concentrated without being too over the top. Doug calls it, "The perfect wine for Pagan rituals - dark, rich, full, bloody, blousy, boozy, and bombastic." The Duke will retail this wine at $40.00 upon release in October, 2006, but you can save 20% by ordering it on "future" today at $31.99 per bottle. Yes, magnums are available at $69.00 per bottle!
In addition to all the ventures (and adventures) listed above, Doug manages to find time to make wine for Tom and Laurel Barrack's Happy Canyon Vineyards. (Check out Tom on the cover of Fortune's October 31, 2005, issue.) As you might have guessed, Happy Canyon Vineyards is located in the newest AVA in the Santa Ynez area, Happy Canyon. This is a warmer location on the eastern side of Santa Barbara County and is just beginning to be recognized for production of outstanding Syrah and Bordeaux varietals. Doug has made three terrific wines that we are offering on "future" at a substantial discount with delivery in October, 2006. Read on for a description of the wines. Happy Canyon Vineyards 2004 Piocho Piocho is a Chumash word that, loosely translated, means "where the two rivers meet and go to heaven." Now, we could probably add "and great Bordeaux varietals grow" to that translation. Piocho is a full-bodied Cabernet Franc-dominated blend with a very good concentration of ripe, almost jammy, red fruit flavors of sweet cherry juice, raspberries, strawberries and currants with herbals, spices, earthy, minerals, vanilla and toasted oak. (Think right-bank Bordeaux.) It is very well balanced with a smooth lingering finish. The wine will retail after release at $30.00, but you can realize a substantial savings by buying "futures" today at $23.99 per bottle . Happy Canyon Vineyards 2004 Brand Brand is a deeply colored, Merlot-based wine with a nose and palate of plums, cassis, licorice, cola, and toasty oak. The finish has a sweet and seductive complexity with rich fruit. The tannins are smooth and supple as one would expect in Merlot. When the wine is released in October, the retail price will be $40.00, but the Duke's "futures" price for this limited-production (125 cases) beauty is $31.99 per bottle. Happy Canyon Vineyards 2004 Ten-Goal Tom Barrack's passion is polo, so it is not surprising that the name of their top wine is polo-related. A polo player's skills are expressed in goals and range from minus two to ten, with ten being the best. There are only five ten-goal players in the United States. Ten-Goal is the best wine, carefully blended, from grapes grown at Happy Canyon Vineyards. It is a strikingly complex blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The aromatics of white chocolate, ink, violets, Chambord liqueur, hints of earth and freshly shaved truffles lead to a full-bodied, dense and layered wine, with sweet fruit, clarity, massively intense flavors, and well-integrated grape and oak tannins. The sum is greater than the parts with the Cabernet Sauvignon bringing the strength and backbone, the Merlot the lush sweet middle palate, and the Cabernet Franc adding the spice and verve. It's a blockbuster and it should age a minimum of 5 years and last for two decades. Intended to retail on release at $60.00 per bottle, the Duke's "futures" price is $47.99 per bottle. Great new wines from a great new AVA! Call the Duke today!!Note: Prices are good while our supplies last and we reserve the right to change them at any time without notice.
