Bill Wathen and Dick Doré have been making world-class wine at Foxen Winery in the Santa Ynez Valley since 1985. Their "rustic" tasting room is shown at right. This year's releases are at an all-time high in interest and demand. Trying to allocate rare wine can become extremely complicated. We have decided to put together two combo packs for this "futures" and "very near futures" offering.

Foxen 2004 Pinot Noir, Sea Smoke Vineyard
James Laube of the Wine Spectator tasted a barrel sample of this wine a few weeks ago and, when referring to a sampling of Central Coast Pinot Noirs, raved: "My favorite wine, Foxen's 2004 Pinot Noir from Sea Smoke Vineyard (95-100 points on the Wine Spectator 100-point scale), was simply stunning, offering a broad, rich range of flavors, a supple, caressing texture and great length." His tasting notes were even more specific, "Rich, opulent and loaded with flavors built around delicious, pure dark plum, blackberry and boysenberry fruit, offering a wonderful mix of smoky, toasty oak. The fruit and oak keep sailing on the long finish. An amazing barrel sample. 400 cases made." He left no room for doubt about his high opinion of the wine!

Foxen 2004 Pinot Noir, Bien Nacido Vineyard, Block 8
Here is another blockbuster Pinot Noir from the capable wine-making hands of the Foxen team. While the wine has not yet been reviewed by the critics, we do have some winemaker notes: "This version of the "Ocho" displays red fruits (strawberries and raspberries) and classic Bien Nacido hard spices (cinnamon stick, clove and cardamom). In the mouth, exotic flavors of strawberry tart, raspberry and cherry cola are beautifully balanced by a creamy mid-palate and lingering finish." (List price - $46.00 - Available 9/1/06)

Foxen 2002 Foothills Reserve
You may remember the Duke's offering a previous vintage of this blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot and referring to it as the Cheval Blanc of the Central Coast. This vintage more than lives up to the previous offering and to the great wine from Bordeaux to which it is compared. We (and a couple hundred members of our Wine Association) had the chance to taste it at our recent seminar and were reminded that the Central Coast is producing top-notch Bordeaux varietals as well as their famous Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Foxen 2003 Syrah, Williamson-Doré Vineyard
Made from grapes grown around Dick's home, this Syrah is earning high marks from the critics, too. Here is what the Wine Spectator said as they awarded it a splendid 92 points: "Ultrarich, almost syrupy, with dense, plush, smoky currant, blackberry, wild berry and exotic spices and game meat scents. Tightly focused, with a long, deep, rich finish and ripe, supple tannins, ending with a dash of cola. Drink now through 2009. 500 cases made." This delicious wine was also sampled at our recent seminar to raves from the assembled multitude.
