Ancient alchemists kept looking for a way to change lead into gold. Better they should have followed Charles Thomas' lead at Rudd Winery to change grapes into wine. No tricks here! Just take what the wonderful land gives you and gently shape it into a palate-pleasing adventure that will delight anyone tasting the product. His wine-making philosophy is simple: ". . . if my job is to make a wine that's expressive of the vineyard characteristics there's a lot less work and ultimately a higher quality level achieved if you don't try to push a wine into something that it's not going to be." The resulting wine, Rudd Estate 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, is a reflection of the Oakville benchland terrior where the grapes are grown. The vineyard is planted in very rocky, red volcanic soils using low-vigor rootstock, in a high-density spacing. The low-yielding clones for this wine were selected because they consistently give high quality and are very effective at expressing terroir. (The picture at upper right is of Rudd's caves.)

Robert Parker finds Rudd wines exciting. His comment, "The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown exhibits a dense ruby/purple color, firm tannin, and an enticing nose of black currants, espresso roast, charcoal, and cedar wood. Although closed, it is dense, promising, and ageworthy, with an upside potential of 12-15 years," reflects that fact as he awarded it 91 points on his 100-point scale.
