We have something really special for you lovers of that nectar of the gods coming from Sauternes. The vintage is 2001, rated 98 points, nearly perfect on Parker's 100-point scale. The wine is 2001 Chateau Raymond-Lafon. We have proudly featured previous vintages of this wine for many years.

To refresh your memory, Chateau Raymond-Lafon abuts Chateau d'Yquem and has been owned since 1972 by the family of Pierre Meslier, former winemaster at Yquem. The same stringent picking, winemaking and selection protocols followed by Yquem are followed by Raymond-Lafon. In fact, in some years the yields are even lower than Yquem. Every year, 20-100% of their production is declassified.

Parker has tasted this wine on two different occasions. From barrel, he rated it 92-94 points and said, "This is a fabulous effort, with big, thick, massive, unctuous flavors redolent with notes of peach, apricot, creme caramel, and espresso. Raymond-Lafon's opulent, full-bodied, powerful, concentrated, rich 2001 should drink well young yet last for three decades." He tasted it as a finished wine in June of 2004 and rated it 93 points. His comments then were similar: "A tightly-knit but unctuous effort, Raymond-Lafon's 2001 exhibits aromas of espresso roast intermixed with honeyed peaches, apricots, lychee nuts, and a hint of coconut. A full-throttle heavyweight, it will be at its finest between 2008-2025+."

Much of this succulent wine is sold to private clients in Europe, so it is difficult to find in this country. Considering the strength of the Euro, the list price should be at least $40.00 per 375ml bottle. While our supply lasts, each 375ml bottle is just $35.00.
