Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon
This is a reminder that our next wine seminar is less than a week away. Here is a copy of the invitation. With great excitement, we invite you to join us on Tuesday, October 11, 2005, for a most fascinating "WORLD TOUR" of extraordinary wines represented by three world-renown luminaries of the wine world: TOM SHELTON representing the United States, ZELMA LONG representing South Africa and BARTHOLOMEW BROADBENT representing New Zealand, Lebanon, Portugal and Madeira. It is an immense treat to have all three of these super guests together to help us present a seminar that will be entertaining and educational as well as delicious. Tom Shelton, a long-time friend of the Duke of Bourbon and The Wine Association, is the President and CEO of JOSEPH PHELPS VINEYARDS and one of the most creative, dynamic and respected gentlemen in today's wine world . Located in the beautiful Spring Valley area of St. Helena in the Napa Valley, the Phelps winery is known for producing one of California's greatest wines: Insignia. In 1974, it was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label. Today, it is legendary. With Tom's charming and knowledgeable commentary, we will present a mini-vertical of three vintages of Insignia, including the newly released 2002 and a preview of the 2003.Zelma Long is one of the foremost women in the world of wine. One of the first women to study enology and viticulture at U.C., Davis, she began her winemaking career at Robert Mondavi Winery, went on to become both Winemaker and CEO of Simi Winery, and has been Bob Long's partner in Long Vineyards for more than 25 years. Today, Zelma and her husband, Phil Freese, are partners in a new joint winemaking venture between the United States and South Africa: VILAFONTE . This ground-breaking red wine project is located in the Pearl-Simonsberg region of South Africa's Simonsberg Mountains. Featuring the classic Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec), Vilafonte is the first winery in South Africa to be focused on producing super-premium wine specifically for the U.S. market. We are thrilled to welcome our equally charming and knowledgeable long-time friend Zelma to help us present her two new beauties: Series C, described as "potent and rich," and Series M, described as "pretty and intriguing."Bartholomew Broadbent, who was our guest last year for a fabulous evening of Ports and Madeiras, is a lively, witty and informative wine lecturer and one of the world's foremost authorities on Port and Madeira. He was raised in the English wine trade in a formal apprenticeship to his famous father, Michael Broadbent, M.W., who founded Christie's International Wine Auction and is the author of several editions of The Great Vintage Wine Book. In 1996, Bartholomew founded his own company, BROADBENT SELECTIONS, INC., the exclusive National importer for many of the world's most sought-after family wineries (including Vilafonte). Tonight, Bartholomew will present the world-class wines of Chateau Musar from Lebanon and Spy Valley from New Zealand, plus three special BROADBENT wines from Portugal and Madeira. * * * * CHATEAU MUSAR, whose vineyards are located in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, was founded in 1930 in the cellar of an old XVIIIth Century castle by Gaston Hochar. In 1984, his son Serge was chosen as Decanter Magazine's first-ever "Wine Man of the Year." Some consider Serge a "magician" who creates extraordinary wines from mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan grapes grown on unique soils that can give the wine a different character and identity each year. * * * * SPY VALLEY wines are produced from Johnson Estate vineyards located in the Wairau Valley of the Marlborough region of New Zealand. Founded in 2000, this Broadbent import features youthful, exuberant Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir bursting with fruit flavor and aroma. Their Winemaker, Ant Mackenzie, is considered one of New Zealand's finest and most-experienced producers of world-class wines.
