Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon
The Duke has been pleased to offer you several previous vintages of the thoroughbred wines of Walter Hansel Vineyards from the Russian River appellation of Sonoma. Hansel's intent is to produce a wine in the style of Burgundy, terroir-driven with racy acidity that makes their wine . . . brace yourself . . . interesting to drink! Interesting, indeed. And critically acclaimed, as well. Both Robert Parker and Jancis Robinson have raved about Hansel wines. Parker, not one to overstate the case, had this to say about the winery: "For a winery founded only in 1996 (situated down the road from Dehlinger and Kistler), this estate is on fire, producing Burgundian-styled offerings that are the products of natural yeast fermentations, gentle handling in the cellars, with the Pinot Noirs kept on their lees, and no fining or filtering at bottling. If readers have not yet tasted the wines of Walter Hansel, they are missing some stunning wines." Read on for the temptations of the current vintages.Walter Hansel 2003 Chardonnay, Estate The Duke had the chance to taste this outstanding effort and loved it! Substantial without being heavy or cloying, perfect balance of fruit and acidity and a long, delightful, rich finish were at the top of our long list of descriptors. Parker enjoyed it also, considering that he awarded it 90 points and wrote, "The 2003 Chardonnay Estate (750 cases) offers notes of tangerines, lemon oil, smoke, earth, and fleshy fruit in a full-bodied, direct, open-knit style." The Duke has it for you at $28.00 per bottle. Order 6 or more and receive an additional discount of 5%!Walter Hansel 2002 Pinot Noir, Estate, Russian River We also had a chance to try this very tasty effort. The sweet aromas of cherry and strawberry carried over into the palate where it mingled nicely with layers of oak and evolved into a lingering spice-filled finish. Believe us, this is a really delicious wine! The Duke's price for this beauty is $28.00 per bottle - a really sensational value. Order 6 or more and receive an additional discount of 5%! Walter Hansel 2002 Pinot Noir, South Slope Parker also awarded this tasty Russian River Pinot Noir 91 points. To quote him, "This beautiful offering displays Pinot's classic black cherry and beet root/cola notes along with abundant allspice, earth, plum, and fig characteristics, and a rich, full-bodied palate with loads of fruit." Nice words and a nice price - $29.99 per bottle. Order 6 or more and receive an additional discount of 5%! Walter Hansel 2002 Chardonnay, Estate We offered this excellent wine to you earlier this year and quickly sold all we could obtain. Since then, Jancis Robinson, noted London-based wine writer, made it her "Wine of the Week" in February, 2005. The winery has released more wine from their library, so we were able to acquire a few more cases. Just to remind you of Parker's opinion as he awarded it 91 points on his 100-point scale: "The 2002 Chardonnay Estate exhibits the classic smoky, hazelnut aromas of a premier cru Meursault. It possesses a straw color with a light greenish hue, medium to full body, plenty of unbuttered popcorn notes, and loads of flavor in its long, heady finish." We are pleased that we can offer it to you at the original price, $28.00 per bottle. Sorry, unlike the original offering, we must limit purchases to 3 bottles.
