Say "Burgundy" and wine lovers will roll their eyes, shake their heads and sigh. Such great wines at such dear prices. Not so fast there, pardner. (Oops, slipped into Old Prospector mode for a minute. It might mean that there is another one coming soon.)Certainly, some Burgundy offerings are off the charts, price-wise. However, many wines are available from that region that taste great but are less depleting to the pocketbook. The 2003 heat wave in Europe set some record-high temperatures. The effect of the hotter vintage was to make some of the cooler vineyards in Burgundy produce riper fruit and richer wines. Also, some of the Grand Cru and Premier Cru wines were declassified and went into some of the lesser wines of some producers. The 2002 vintage is recognized as "classic" by most critics and it appears that an equally outstanding vintage is following hard on its heels. In a recent article, the Wine Spectator called the 2003 vintage "great" and rated it 92-96 points. They referred to the wines as "exotic, ripe and concentrated." There is a point to the preceeding. As you know from our previous emails, the Duke presented the wines of Maison Joseph Drouhin at our latestWine Association seminar. The 2003 wines appeared to be more rich and forward than is usual for Burgundy. The wines we tasted seemed like they had the ability to age well. All had good acid - no flab in any of them. The wines showed so well that we decided to offer them to customers on our email list. We are also offering the Drouhin wines from their property in Oregon. The wines marked "NT" were not tasted that night, but are being offered because they are so well-known.
