You all should know how excited the Duke becomes when he finds a new wine coming from the Napa Valley. Here is one that has his heart racing!

Match Vineyards has released its first wine, the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, Butterdragon Hill. The winery is owned by Sasha Match and Randy Sloan. The wine is made by Cary Gott from a spectacular seven-acre vineyard (pictured) on a hillside north of St. Helena using modern technology to promote an old-world craft. Butterdragon Hill is farmed by premier Napa grape-grower Jim Barbour and the experts at Barbour Vineyards. Give these guys and gals a piece of Napa Valley hillside and they'll plant it with an extremely narrow 3x5 spacing and then give it water by the teaspoonful until the grapes seem to cry out for relief. The grapes may not be "happy, happy," but those droopy faces provide sophisticated flavors in a lush, succulent wine.

Winemaker Cary Gott offers these tasting notes from April: "The 2002 Match Cabernet Sauvignon is drinking very well right now. This wine opens in the glass with delicate notes of spices, tealeaf, berries and hints of French oak. In the mouth, it has the full and rich body of a classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with lovely dark berries and chocolate, finishing with sweet, soft tannins. It will continue to develop into an outstanding wine and age gracefully for at least 15 years." The Duke's staff tasted it and couldn't agree more. After only a couple of weeks in the store, the customer reaction to our recommending it has been outstanding.
