We recently sent the following invitation to members of the Duke's Wine Association. You're invited, too! There are only a few seats left. Don't miss out. Call us today! It is a pleasure to invite you to join us Tuesday, June 21, 2005, for a fascinating seminar featuring "2003 BURGUNDIES from MAISON JOSEPH DROUHIN
." Joseph Drouhin founded this famous "negociant firm" in 1880 when he purchased an existing wine house established in 1796. Located in the heart of Beaune, France, Drouhin produces some of the world's finest wines from some of France's most famous Burgundian vineyards. In addition, the Drouhin Family owns the outstanding U.S. winery, Domaine Drouhin Oregon. The House of Drouhin produces upwards of 80 different wines each year, many of which are extremely limited and difficult to obtain. Chardonnay for White Burgundy and Pinot Noir for Red Burgundy are the grapes used in this treasured appellation. The three massive cellars (all preserved in their original states) of the Drouhin Family include one with Gothic architecture and vaulted ceilings built in the 13th Century, one situated beneath the 14th-Century former palace of the Dukes of Burgundy and one located under the ancient Parliament of Beaune-a cellar that was built for the kings of France in the 16th Century.
The current issue of Wine Spectator referred to both the 2002 and 2003 red Burgundies as "great." The Spectator's writers rated the 2003 Vintage 92-96, describing the wines as "exotic, ripe and concentrated," and said that the best are destined to be classics. The record-breaking heat in France in 2003 caused extraordinary ripeness. At Maison Joseph Drouhin, the harvest was begun on August 20, the earli
est since 1822! We are fortunate to have the opportunity to preview Drouhin's exciting 2003 white and red Burgundies, which are being sent to us from their cellars in Beaune especially for our event.
In a repeat of previous successful Burgundy seminars, we are delighted to welcome back our special guest NETTA WILLIAMS, the long-time and knowledgable Regional Sales Manager for Maison Joseph Drouhin. Netta will lead us in this barrel-sample tasting, which promises to be an illuminating experience for all of us. Among the treats will be the 2003 Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc, 2003 Beaune Clos des Mouches Red and 2002 Charmes Chambertin (not a barrel sample). In addition, we will show three wines from the Drouhins' Oregon property. All of the wines served will be available to order at very special "futures" pricing for delivery in November, 2005.
