Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon

We almost hate to say this, "But, Boy! You should have been there last night." Last night was actually February 10th, but you should have been there anyway. Both Dick and Jenny Dore, co-owners of Foxen along with Bill and Becky Wathen, joined us at our Wine Association event and we had the chance to taste some of their terrific wines. Foxen has been producing some of the finest limited-production, vineyard-designated wines on the Central Coast. (Their tasting room, described as "rustic, at best," is pictured at right.)

Read on to see what we mean!

Foxen 2001 Foothills Reserve (New Release)
This one could be subtitled "Cheval Blanc from the Central Coast." Parker rated it 91 points and said, " . . . a superlative effort from Foxen. The 2001 Foothills Reserve, a blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, is a European-styled red offering a dense ruby/purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of white chocolate, black cherries, currants, cedar, and high class French oak. A rich, multidimensional, well-textured, medium to full-bodied, long red with supple tannin, it should drink well for 7-8 years."

The Duke agrees. Normally retailing for $41.00, we have it for you at $35.00 per bottle. Buy 6 or more and save an additional 5%.

Foxen 2002 Syrah, Williamson-Dore Vyd. (New Release)
This tasty gem showed beautifully with lovely Syrah fruit flavors and a long, delicious finish. The vineyard is Dick and Jenny's "baby" and is located in Happy Canyon, an area just east of Los Olivos that you will hear about more and more often in the coming years. Parker also tasted this one and commented, "The 2002 Syrah Williamson-Dore Vineyard reveals more oak than its siblings along with a complex, creamy black fruit nose with herbs, vanilla, chocolate, and pepper in the background. Medium to full-bodied, nicely-textured, and rich, it is an impressively made Syrah to consume over the next 5-7 years."

Regular retail price is $35.00; the Duke's price is $29.99 per bottle. Buy 6 or more and save an additional 5%.

Foxen 2002 Pinot Noir, Bien Nacido Vyd. (Available May 1, 2005)
When we tasted this wine, you could see the eyes of all the "Pinot Lovers" light up. Parker, never seeming to tire of handing out 91-point ratings, wrote, " The opaque ruby/purple-colored 2002 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard Block 8 looks more like a Syrah than a Pinot, but it offers a classic Pinot Noir bouquet of plums, sweet cherries, anise, earth, and a hint of sassafrass. It is medium to full-bodied, with crisp, zesty acidity backing up its concentration and vibrancy. This is a big, up-lifting Pinot to drink over the next 5-7 years. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered." We loved it as well. In fact, one "experienced" (read significantly older) member of our staff said it was "the best Bien Nacido Pinot I have ever tasted."

Normally retailing for $41.00, the Duke has it for $35.00 per bottle. Buy 6 or more and save an additional 5%.

And now, for something really rare . . .

Foxen 2003 Pinot Noir, Sea Smoke Vyd. (Available September 1, 2005)
If the Pinot Noir from the Bien Nacido Vineyard caused eyes to light up, this one made 'em spin! What a superb example of Pinot Noir! Rich and full and powerful, but with an underlying elegance, this wine adds definition to the words Pinot Noir. A paltry 250 cases of this wine were made. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, the wine presents layers of flavor and nuance. Dark cherry and plum notes on the nose follow onto the palate along with earthy overtones and spice notes leading to a lingering finish. Simply put, this is a special wine.

When this wine is released in September of 2005, the retail price will be at least $60.00, assuming you can even find it. By the way, Foxen is the only outside winery with access to the fruit from Sea Smoke Vineyards. The Duke has it on future for $54.00 per bottle. Those of you who purchase at least 6 bottles of any of the Foxen wines presented above may order 2 bottles of Foxen Sea Smoke. Order 12 bottles or more of any of the other Foxen wines and you may order up to 4 bottles of Sea Smoke. This offer is good only until March 31, or while supplies last.

Remember, if you don't know Foxen, you don't know Dick . . . or Bill!
