Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon

The Duke is easily excitable about new projects, as anyone who reads our emails knows. However, we also get excited when old friends bring out something sensational. Randy Dunn, Napa winemaking pioneer, has produced another vintage of his fabled Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon that will stir the souls of his fans.

Randy started making wine at Caymus during the previous century, 1975 to be exact, and was responsible, along with Charlie and Chuck Wagner, for establishing that winery's enduring reputation as a producer of premium Cabernet Sauvignon. He left Caymus in 1982 to start his own label. His first release was from the 1979 vintage. Interestingly, he still produces about the same amount of wine as he did in those early years. Perhaps bigger is not better in all cases.

His current release of Dunn 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain, has received high scores from Robert Parker as well as some very nice words. Parker awarded the wine 94-96 points and enthused, "The formidable 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain boasts an inky/purple color to the rim, and smells like blackberry liqueur intermixed with acacia flowers. With extraordinary intensity, power, richness, and purity, it looks to be one of the greatest efforts made by Randy Dunn. Since none of the Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignons (first released in 1979) are close to full maturity, this 2001 will probably need 8-10 years of cellaring; it should last for 3-4 decades."

But we should not overlook the Dunn 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa. It earned 90-93 points from Parker as he said, " . . . the 2001 Cabernet Sauv ignon Napa possesses an inky/purple color as well as a restrained, but sweet bouquet of blackberries intermixed with hints of new saddle leather and crushed rocks. Firmly structured, with a steely spine, exuberant, rich fruit, and a powerful, highly tannic finish, it should be cellared for 7-8 years, and drunk over the following two decades." These are truly collectors' wines and very scarce.

The Duke is offering these gems to our faithful readers. The Howell Mountain bottling is available at $75.00 per bottle and the Napa bottling is $65.00 per bottle. Buy a mixed 6-pack (3 of each) while they last for $415.00.
