Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon
Faithful readers of the Duke's e-mails have been reading about our
offerings of "old and rare" wines. In the spirit of the baseball season,
we're throwing you a change-up and telling you about some new, but no less
rare, offerings.
October is here and that means the World Series to
some, but to us wine fan(atic)s it is even more important. It also means
that some of the most sought-after Napa Valley wines, many from one of the
finest vintages (2001) on record, are being released. The Duke is excited to be able to bring you some of
these fabulous oenological efforts. Please understand if we limit
quantities, since these wines are highly allocated. We try our best to
serve as many of our loyal customers as possible.
That old
saying, "LOOK OUT BELOW!" seems to be applicable right now. So, look
out below! One of these offerings is certain to hit a home run with
you. These prices are good through the final out of the World Series or
October 31, 2004, whichever comes later.

Dalla Valle 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (RP 90-92) As always, a sleekly sophisticated wine with impressive structure and velvety fruit. A quote from Parker: "The deep ruby/purple-colored 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up aromas of minerals, licorice, acacia flowers, blackberries, and cassis. Tannic, medium-bodied, and tightly-knit, with a long finish . . ." The list price is $110.00 per bottle, but the Duke has it for $599.99 per 6-pack.
Dalla Valle 2001 Maya (RP 90-93) Extremely rare, the tiny production of Maya is 50% lower in 2001 than in previous vintages. A graceful, elegant wine with outstanding aging potential. More from Parker: ". . . an impressively endowed, dense ruby/purple-colored offering displaying earth, black fruit, cedar, tobacco leaf, and cassis aromas as well as flavors . . ." We have decided to package this with 6 of the Dalla Valle 2001 Cabernet Sauvignons and offer the entire 7-bottle package for $829.50.

Spottswoode 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (RP 95) All of the ingredients are here - clove, mocha, berry, dark chocolate, spice and brush - and this wine resonates with the classic Spottswoode Estate berry pie spice characters. Dense, packed, and concentrated, yet smooth and lingering. From Parker: " A classic example of power allied with elegance, it possesses undeniable finesse yet tremendous flavor intensity without being heavy. This beauty is one of the most provocative and intense efforts of the vintage, yet it is strikingly delicate for its concentrated personality." We have it for $89.50 per bottle.

Araujo 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (RP 97) Araujo's Eisele Vineyard has long been known to produce some of California's most concentrated and age-worthy wines. Parker, again: "Layered, multidimensional, and pure, it admirably balances power and elegance. For me, this is the finest Cabernet Sauvignon produced at this estate since 1995."
The bottle price is $199.99. SOLD OUT (Limit 2 bottle)

Bond 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Vecina (RP 90) Bond 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Melbury (RP 90) Two superb, single-vineyard efforts from Harlan Estate. Very limited production as with all the Harlan wines. From Parker: "The 2000 Melbury displays tremendously fragrant aromas of black cherries, currants, licorice, and toasty oak, medium to full body, luscious fruit on the attack . . ." And about Vecina: "Medium-bodied, with beautiful fruit, excellent purity, and a long, complex finish, it will drink well for 10-13 years." Sorry, but we have to limit purchases to 1 bottle of each. Bottle price for either is $199.99.

Whitehall Lane 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, Reserve (WS 92-94) This is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon with a deep, intense color and a distinct fruit center that begins with black cherry, violet and currant aromas. It is well-balanced, elegant and sleek on the palate, delivering very long berry and cherry flavors through to the finish. The list price is $75.00, but the Duke's price is $69.99 per bottle. (Limit 6 bottles)

|
PlumpJack 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, Reserve (RP 94-96) As usual, Parker says it succinctly: "Perhaps the finest wine yet produced at Plumpjack . . . Full-bodied and dense yet impeccably well-balanced with well-integrated tannin, good acidity, stunning ripeness and richness as well as fabulous purity, this is a powerhouse red with great balance and equilibrium."
The Duke has it for $165.00 per bottle. (Limit 1 bottle)
Reminder: PlumpJack finished 50% of the 2001 vintage with screw type closures and the remainder with cork. Please specify your preference when you call.

|
Shafer 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Hillside Select (RP 92) Parker says, ". . . it stands out as one of the vintage's finest wines. A powerful, concentrated, medium to full-bodied Cabernet possessing outstanding fruit and aromatics as well as suppleness, and a sweet, low acid finish." The Duke's price is $159.99 per bottle. (Limit 1 bottle)

Opus One 2001 Need we say more? How about some notes from the winemaker: "Inky purple in color with undertones of magenta, the 2001 Opus One embodies concentrated opulence. It shows aromas of black currant, black cherry liqueur, plum, fresh vanilla, with hints of graham cracker and black peppercorn. A supple, creamy entry is followed by intense flavors of ripe black cherry, cassis, and dark chocolate. The wine's dense richness is complemented by fine, well-integrated tannins and a voluptuous texture. The finish is long, with lingering black fruit and savory spice." The price at the winery in Napa Valley is $160.00 per bottle. The Duke is offering this Napa classic for just $139.99 .
