Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon
The Duke continues to offer futures on wine from the Central Coast area with this reprise of an email we sent a few months ago. These are two off-the-chart-tasty wines from Foxen Winery, which is located just south of Santa Maria. Foxen's production is limited and co-founders Dick Dore and Bill Wathen do their best to make wine that is "true to the fruit." So, take a minute and read (or re-read) all about these outstanding wines.
Foxen 2002 Pinot Noir, Sea Smoke Vineyard
Bill is an extraordinary "wine grower." Pinot Noir is such an expression of place that we use those words in their truest sense. A few months ago, Sea Smoke Cellars released a terrific Pinot Noir from the Santa Rita Hills AVA that sold out and allowed that winery to achieve cult status in nanoseconds. Bill has been consulting with Sea Smoke on vineyard management. They were so pleased with the result that they offered him some of their precious fruit so Foxen could make wine from the site also. Foxen is the only other winery to have Sea Smoke grapes.
And what a wine it is! The grapes are Dijon clones and the soil, microclimate and exposure are perfect for the growing of world-class fruit. The wine is dark ruby in color and the nose evolves into aromas of bright fruit with some floral notes. Cherry and berry flavors are expressed on the palate and the wine finishes long and lingering in the mouth. Every Pinot Noir grape should aspire to become wine just like this.
The projected release price of the 2002 Sea Smoke Vineyard Pinot Noir is $60.00. The Duke is offering this wine on a futures basis for delivery in August, 2004, for $48.00 per bottle, a 20% savings on a wine that promises to generate critical acclaim and tremendous demand. Better yet, buy a 6-pack and receive an additional 5% savings, making your cost $270.00 or $45.00 per bottle. Only 200 cases of this soon-to-be big-time gem were produced.
Foxen 2002 Syrah, Williamson-Dore Vineyard
This wine comes from the vineyard of Dick Dore and his wife Jenny Williamson, hence the Williamson-Dore Vineyard. This limited production wine will receive sixteen months in French oak before being bottled. The nose is typical of New World Syrah - earth and game. Hints of black pepper start on the palate and grow to luscious fruit flavors in the mouth leading to a long, lasting, silky finish. The Duke's staff rated this wine - 95+.
Here's a chance to get a supply of this sensational wine at a substantial savings by ordering it on future. The wine is expected to retail at $35.00 upon release in mid-April, but the Duke is offering it for just $28.00 per bottle, a 20% savings. Buy it by the 6-pack and save an additional 5%, making your cost $159.00 ($26.50 per bottle).
Don't delay! Gems like these sell quickly.
