Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon

This time around we have a real treat for you collectors. It is not very often that we are able to offer aged wines in significant quantities (and at a reasonable cost) but we may have found a rare one for you - Joseph Phelps 1989 Cabernet Sauvignon, Eisele Vineyard.

First, let us tell you a little bit about Eisele Vineyard. Located in northern Napa Valley, east of Calistoga, it sits on rocky, well-drained soil where warm days and cool evening breezes through the Chalk Hill gap make it the perfect environment for Cabernet Sauvignon. It has been under vine since the 1880's but only to Cabernet Sauvignon since 1964. Eisele Vineyard was the source of one of the earliest, vineyard-designated wines produced in California (by Ridge in 1971). Joseph Phelps began buying the grapes in 1975 and produced highly acclaimed, vineyard-designated wines from the grapes until the 1991 vintage. Bart and Daphne Araujo acquired the property from Milt and Barbara Eisele in 1990 and we all know how successful the Araujo's have been making wine from that vineyard.

Eisele Vineyard has always produced outstanding fruit and all of the wines can be considered classic, even legendary. Robert Parker, when asked in 1983 about the greatest wine he had ever tasted, replied, "I would undoubtedly say the 1975 Eisele Vineyard from Phelps." Later, in 1990, he would review ten of the vintages (six of which were awarded scores of 90+) and preface his comments with, "The Eisele Vineyard Cabernet, from Milton Eisele's dry-farmed vineyard in Northern Napa Valley just east of Calistoga, produces some of the most intense and richest fruit of the entire valley."

The Duke has been able to obtain a limited quantity of the Joseph Phelps 1989 Cabernet Sauvignon, Eisele Vineyard to offer to our faithful readers. The wine has been stored in ideal conditions since bottling so you can be sure of the storage conditions. Notes from the Phelps cellar: "Full of the rich, earthy, black currant component that has made the wine a favorite of collectors for almost two decades. . ." The price is $35.00 per bottle (no, this is not a typo.) Sorry, but we must limit purchases to 6 bottles.

And for those of you who would like to compare the old with the new - we are offering a special combination 6-pack. Get 3 of the 1989 Eisele and 3 of the Innisfree 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (also by Joseph Phelps - list price $20.00) for a total price of $148.50.

Do not miss out on this chance to obtain wine from one of the most famous patches of dirt in the entire Napa Valley!

Don't delay! Gems like these sell quickly.

Think of fine wine! Think of the Duke!
