In 1996, food and wine entrepreneur Leslie Rudd realized his dream of owning a winery in Napa Valley. The outstanding Rudd Oakville Estate Vineyard and Winery sits on the red, rocky soils of the foothills of the Vaca Mountains at the junction of the Oakville Crossroad and the Silverado Trail. It is flanked by the renowned vineyards of Dalla Valle, Opus One, Harlan Estate, Screaming Eagle, Phelps Backus and Silver Oak. This gravelly soil is the ideal site for Bordeaux varietals. Ideal soil and ideal growing conditions in 2001 gave the Rudd winemaking team incredibly delicious fruit to make the Rudd 2001 Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wine they made is absolutely delicious. We were so busy enjoying it that we didn't take notes. However, our friend, Robert Parker did: 'The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown (2,150 cases of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc) is spectacular. An inky/purple color is accompanied by aromas of espresso roast, melted fudge, blackberries, currants, and smoke. Rich, with great intensity, tremendous purity, an opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel, and good underlying tannin as well as freshness, it should drink well for 12-15 years.' Parker awarded the wine an extraordinary 95 points on his 100-point scale.
