Cheers from the Duke of Bourbon!

The Duke faithful will recall that we had the pleasure and privilege of introducing an exciting new winery, Hundred Acre, several months ago. The inaugural vintage, 2000, was highly acclaimed as 'the Le Pin of Napa Valley' (Wine Advocate #142, August 2002) and was in extremely great demand. Their limited production of that vintage sold quickly.

The next vintage is the 2001 and is scheduled for release March 15, 2004. That sounds simple-minded, but it is said with purpose. Much as a Port producer declares a vintage year, Hundred Acre Cabernet Sauvignon will not be released in a given year unless it meets the exceptionally high standards imposed by the owner, Jayson Woodbridge, and the winemaker, Phillipe Melka. The 2001 vintage does meet those standards and then some. Robert Parker tasted it in barrel, rated it at 92-94 and raved about the glorious nature of the wine (op. cit.). To quote further from that article:

'This is a lascivious, powerful, smoky sex pot of great fruit intensity, purity, and voluptuousness. The texture is unctuous, the fruit level remarkable, and the wine gloriously pure, rich, and bursting with black currant and sweet cherry fruit as well as nicely integrated, toasty French oak. It will drink well for 15+ years. This exciting debut effort possesses an individualistic, distinctive style all to the credit of this brash newcomer, a tightly-spaced vineyard situated on the Silverado Trail, north of St. Helena, near the Rombauer Vineyard. This is an impressive effort fashioned by Philippe Melka, who believes this site has "unlimited potential."

Hundred Acre Winery is happily making a limited quantity of 3-pack cases of the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon available to the Duke's loyal following in time for the holidays. The bad news is that the quantity is limited, but the good news is that the price will be the same as for the incredible 2000 vintage - $150.00 per bottle or $450.00 per 3-pack in a beautiful, hand-made, custom wooden box. Each pack contains a specially made French SK screwdriver to cope with opening the 'fortress.'
