How does it come to pass that wine has the flavor it has... is it a matter of "STYLE OR PLACE?" Join us on Thursday, April 8, 1999 for a most special and enlightening evening as we explore this important subject and showcase wines from six distinct appellations - Malibu; Mendocino County; Napa Valley; Sonoma County; Walla Walla, Washington; and Marlborough, New Zealand! Our winery guests will include Dennis Fife Fife Vineyards, George & Karen Rosenthal of Rosenthal - The Malibu Estate, Carolyn Vineyard of Jordan, and Merrick Dowson representing Glen Fiona & Isabel Estate. Joining us to lead our discussion will be nationally - known wine writer Karen MacNeil, who is the head wine instructor at the culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley and is married to Dennis Fife. Karen's vast knowledge and excellent communication skills are certain to make for lively interplay between Karen and our other charming guests.

FIFE VINEYARDS, located in Napa Valley and Mendocino County - was established by Dennis Fife In 1991. Dennis has been producing absolutely stunning wines with the following winemaking philosophy: seek out grapes with personality and distinction, handle them minimally and allow them to be expressed in wines of concentration, focus and purity of fruit. All this will be evident in the five Fife wines presented this evening.

ROSENTHAL - THE MALIBU ESTATE, located off of Kanan Road in the Malibu Hills of Southern California, is the beautiful vineyard property of George & Karen Rosenthal. Since their first vintage in 1991, their distinctive, rich and complex Cabernet Sauvignons have been extremely well-received. We are honored to be having the premiere showing of their 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon along with their excellent Merlot and the first Chardonnay under the Rosenthal label.

JORDAN VINEYARD, a stunning estate located in the Alexander Valley of Northern Sonoma County, was founded by Tom Jordan in the early 1970's. He produced his first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1976 and the wide popularity of his truly distinctive wines continues to this day. We are delighted to welcome Carolyn Vineyard, Jordan's long-time consultant and Southern California Representative, who will share their new releases of Cabernet and Chardonnay.

GLEN FIONA wines are produced in the Walla Walla Valley of Washington State by Rusty Figgins, the younger brother of Gary Figgins, who owns the legendary Leonetti Winery. Rusty's superior, exceptionally-structured Syrah has received numerous rave reviews and is considered the standard-bearer amongst Rhone-style Syrah in the Pacific Northwest. Our friend Merrick Dowson, owner of the Importing company Adventures in Wine representing a multitude of excellent wines from all over the world, has brought us this exciting Syrah.

ISABEL ESTATE, located in Marlborough, New Zealand, was established in the early 1980s by Mike & Robyn Tilley. Until four years ago, all of their grapes were sold to their high-profile and highly-successful neighbor, Cloudy Bay (owned by Veuve-Clicquot). In 1995, they began producing their own wine. They now keep half of their grapes for their own label, with the balance still going to Cloudy Bay. With the help of Merrick Dowson, it is our pleasure to introduce the limited, true single vineyard wines of the Isabel Estate, all of which are a strong expression of the individual style and character determined by the vineyard site and soil.

The cost for this seminar is $35.00 each for the member and the first guest. Additional guest and non-member reservations are $39.00 each. Full payment must accompany your reservation.
