Long Vineyards
Silver Oak

Dear Wine Associates:

With great pleasure, we invite you to join us on Wednesday, February 11, 1998, as we explore "what makes great wines great." A most distinguished and knowledgeable group of guests will guide us in our exploration as we sample and discuss a truly outstanding selection of "great" wines.

To lead our discussion, we are delighted to welcome noted wine authority, writer and teacher Karen MacNeil. Karen, who is married to Dennis Fife, has a long list of credentials. Her articles have been published in more than 50 national magazines and newspapers including: The New York Times, Food & Wine, Sunset, Saveur, Metropolitan Home, Playboy, Wine Spectator, USA Today and the Los Angeles Times Magazine. In addition, she has just completed The Wine Primer, the first encyclopedia on wines of the world written by an American author. Karen is an instructor at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, frequently appears on national television and has just completed a television pilot for PBS called "Wine Country." Karen will speak on many subjects throughout the evening, with major emphasis on "what makes great wines great" and the importance of personality in wine. We are expecting a lively interplay between Karen and our other guests.

Dennis Fife, who has had a long and varied career in the wine industry, established FIFE VINEYARDS in 1991 and has been producing absolutely stunning wines. His winemaking philosophy is to seek out grapes with personality and distinction, handle them minimally and allow them to be expressed in wines of concentration, focus and purity of fruit. All this will be evident in the four Fife wines presented this evening. We are pleased to welcome back our long-time friend Sandi Belcher, co-winemaker at LONG VINEYARDS and co-owner, along with John Arns, of ARNS. Sandi has been involved in the huge success of Long Vineyards wines for over 20 years and her fledgling Arns wines have been extremely well received. We look forward to her commentary as we present five outstanding new releases from Long Vineyards and an exciting pre-release showing of the Arns 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Also on return engagements will be Susan Cannon, the Southern California Sales Director for SILVER OAK, and Christie Gerlach, the Los Angeles Regional Representative for CHATEAU MONTELENA. Both of these lovely ladies are well-spoken and knowledgeable about their respective wines. The Silver Oak 1993 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is the second release of this highly coveted wine since the famed Bonny's Vineyard grapes were added to the blend. The highly acclaimed Chateau Montelena 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon, which will be released on March 1, is considered by the winery to be the most balanced, in a California style, of their great '90s vintages.
