"Bountiful Harvest"
Featuring:
Joseph Phelps Vineyards - Milat Vineyards - Baileyana Winery

Dear Wine Associates:
Fall in step with the Fall Season and join us on Wednesday, October 23, 2002 as we present a "BOUNTIFUL HARVEST" of exciting wines from three very special California wine properties, with guest appearances by their personable and "cultivated" co-proprietors.

JOSEPH PHELPS VINEYARDS, founded by Joe Phelps in 1972, is located in the beautiful Spring Valley area of St. Helena. The winery has always produced excellent Napa Valley wines displaying innovative spirit and passion for quality. They pioneered a number of "firsts" in the early years: the 1974 Insignia was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label and the release of their 1974 Syrah sparked industry-wide interest in this Rhone varietal.

As the saying goes, "As you sow, so shall you reap." Since we've sown the seeds of a relationship with Phelps Vineyards from the beginning and developed it even further with President and Co-owner TOM SHELTON, we now enjoy reaping the rewards of that association. Tom has been a great friend to the Duke of Bourbon, having joined us for many successful dinner and seminar events over the years and making his special wines readily available to our customers. We are happy to welcome him back to help us preview the spectacular Phelps 2000 Insignia and Backus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, plus a special new release and a selection of their other popular wines.

MILAT VINEYARDS, originally an 1877 homesteaded property in St. Helena along Highway 29, was founded in 1949 by Richard & Izetta Milat, the grandparents of Michelle Milat Duckhorn. For years, Michelle's parents (Mike & Carolyn) and Uncle & Aunt (Bob & Joyce) have run the family vineyards. They began to produce their own wines in 1986. In 2001, Bob & Joyce decided to focus on the vineyards, while Mike & Carolyn continued the winery operations. To assist them, Michelle and her husband DAVID DUCKHORN (of the Duckhorn Vineyards family) joined the family business.

Under David's knowledgeable direction, the winery is producing high quality, 100% estate wines which he has made available to the Duke of Bourbon. We are absolutely delighted to welcome David as a Wine Association guest to present Milat's latest crop of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and a surprise barrel sample. We know you will appreciate both his charming personality and his insightful comments.

BAILEYANA WINERY, located in the Edna Valley on California's Central Coast, was founded in 1993 by the late Catharine Niven who, along with her husband Jack, pioneered grape growing in that now-famous appellation. The Niven Family is also co-owner of Edna Valley Vineyards along with Chalone Vineyard. By 1998, Catharine's children were in charge of running the winery and wisely decided to hire veteran winemaker Christian Roguenant (who has been a Wine Association guest many times). Christian helped design their beautiful new state-of-the-art winery on a knoll surrounded by vineyards adjacent to the chain of ancient volcanoes known as the Seven Sisters. The seventh in this chain is known as Firepeak, form which their estate vineyard derives it name.

We are extremely impressed with both Baileyana's facility and its wines. On our recent visit during the crush we were hosted by John Niven and Mike Blaney (Catherine's grandsons) as well as Christian Roguenant, who shared their winemaking philosophy and several of their delicious new wines. We think you'll enjoy tasting many of them as much as you'll enjoy meeting our guest MIKE BLANEY, who is Baileyana's affable Director of Operations.
